Scotland’s Bumblebees: A Buzzing Conservation Victory

In central Scotland, a remarkable rewilding project has transformed former barley fields into thriving meadows, leading to a dramatic increase in bumblebee populations. The 90-acre site, known as Denmarkfield, has seen bumblebee numbers soar from just 35 in 2021 to over 4,000 by 2023—a 116-fold increase. (The Scotsman,2024).

This transformation was achieved by allowing nature to reclaim the land, resulting in the natural colonization of 84 different plant species. These diverse plants have created a haven for pollinators, demonstrating the profound impact of habitat restoration on biodiversity.
