Lights Go Out and the Laughs Kick In: Spain’s Resilience During Power Outage

Real Resilience During Power Outage: What Spain Taught Us

On April 28, 2025, millions of people across Spain and Portugal were suddenly… unplugged. No lights. No Wi-Fi. No trains. No coffee machines. (Okay, that last one might’ve been the hardest.)
A massive, unexpected power outage swept the region, knocking out about 60% of Spain’s electricity supply — a jaw-dropping 15 gigawatts gone in a blink. Cities stood still. Phones went dark. ATMs refused to cooperate. For a few surreal hours, modern life hit pause.
And yet?
The most powerful thing wasn’t what people lost. It was in the resilience they found.

Flamenco by Flashlight

In Barcelona, neighbors filled the plazas. In Seville, someone whipped out a guitar and a flamenco dancer followed like it was a scene from a feel-good movie. People gathered — not on screens, but in real life. They told stories. Played cards. Shared melting ice cream like it was fine dining.
Over in Lisbon, locals and tourists danced under the stars — because when the power grid went down, the people lit up. That’s resilience.

The Wi-Fi Was Out… So We Talked

One man said he spoke more to his neighbors in two hours than in the past two years. Kids learned that radio still exists. Teenagers were spotted playing actual board games — reports are still unconfirmed, but hope springs eternal.

A Lightbulb Moment (Without the Bulb)

It turns out when the power cuts out, connection cuts in. People adapt. They laugh. They share. They show up for each other.
That’s the kind of stuff I love.
Because joy is not something you plug in. It’s something you choose — even when the coffee’s cold and your phone is a glorified paperweight.
So here’s to the folks in Spain and Portugal who found the good, even in the dark. You reminded us all: sometimes when the lights go out, the best parts of humanity light up.
